Basecamp gives the live count a page of its own: how many people are in the product right this second, plotted on a world map that names the city each one is working from.
Better than a running total of everyone who ever signed up, because actively using it now is the number that says the thing gets used. Whether it holds up on a Saturday afternoon is another question.
